2020 Thanksgiving Travel Outlook for AAA Releases

A recent study found that because of the current coronavirus outbreak, travelers hitting the road for the Thanksgiving holiday travel season would face less traffic and congestion than in previous years.

An estimated 50 million Americans are expected to travel for Thanksgiving, according to AAA Travel, but a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and advice from health and government officials to stay home is likely to result in an even smaller number of holiday travelers.

At least a 10 percent decline in travel is forecast by AAA Travel, which would be the biggest one-year drop since the 2008 Great Recession. It is also predicted that visitors can travel shorter distances and decrease the number of days they are away.

Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said, "The wait-and-see travel trend continues to affect final travel decisions, particularly for the Thanksgiving holiday." "The travel decision is a personal one. The majority will go by car for those who are considering making a journey, which allows the ability to change holiday travel arrangements before the day of departure.

Automobile travel is expected to fall 4.3 percent to 47.8 million Americans, even with road trips being the dominant mode of travel this Thanksgiving holiday season (95 percent).

This year, the amount of Thanksgiving air travel will drop by almost 50 percent, as only 2.4 million passengers are projected to fly to their holiday destinations. Other modes of transport, including buses, trains and cruises, are projected to decrease to 353,000 Americans by 76 percent.
