TSA moves its security checkpoint to the new terminal at The New SLC

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has moved its security operations to a modern and spacious terminal with the first phase of the New SLC Airport open to travellers.

A single, unified security checkpoint equipped with automated screening lanes will welcome travelers departing from The New SLC (ASLs).

Multiple travelers can simultaneously position their products in screening bins with ASLs; conveyor belts transfer bins into the X-ray machine tunnel and return the bins to the front of the security checkpoint automatically. Any bag requiring a bag check must be electronically redirected as the screening process proceeds uninterrupted with other luggage.

ASL bins are 25 percent bigger and can accommodate a roll-aboard suitcase than a standard bin. Every bin has a unique Radio Frequency Identification tag that enables the carry-on property of a traveler to be more accountable as it passes through the security screening process. The ASL-integrated cameras capture pictures of the contents of each bin and are side-by-side linked to the X-ray image of the contents of the carry-on bag.

In addition to the ASLs, the security checkpoint includes eight body scanners from Advanced Imaging Technology, nine walk-through metal detectors and systems for explosive detection.

Over the past few years, TSA has worked closely with the Department of Airports of Salt Lake City to develop TSA work areas within The New SLC to provide our employees with optimal space to carry out security checks. As a consequence, in all our activities, TSA will see increased performance," said Mark Lewis, TSA Federal Security Director for Utah.

It was also the duty of TSA to check and inspect more than two million square feet of the new sterile terminal area in order to ensure that all prohibited objects were removed so that the new SLC could be opened to travelers on 15 September 2020.
